Counting down to a new year make us feeling like writing a new set of numbers at the end of the date will bring changes and happiness. Meanwhile, looking back to this past year and to the one about to begin. I come to the conclusion that the most important thing is that I will live facing the same God.

Expectation of the new year

When facing new seasons in our lives, we can’t stop the rise of emotions. Those emotions could look like excitement, motivation, uncertainty, fear, doubts, etc. We all one way or another have expectations of what should happen or what we wish will happen in the new season. The new date on the calendar makes us to desire even more new things.

After this past two years, with so many changes in society affecting all of us. I am as well at the expectation of what will happen in this new year. While I am doing all my tasks to close the year, which include updating my agenda, planning the new semester of school, setting my personal and family goals; I have to stop and thinking about a truth.

Happy New Year!

The priorities

It is common to read or listen that our lives will change accordingly to our priorities. Because that which is a priority for you, will get your attention and quality time. I’ve understood this for a long time, but I have always been intrigued by the fact that we don’t always prioritize what’s most important. Often times I have a list of priorities, but we devote our time to other things.

Meditating on this, I have come to the conclusion that priorities don’t change. But we do focus on the things we prefer. What do I mean by this? I mean that there is no need to make a new list every year. A list to remember that God is in first place, then my family, etc. What I need is to make a decision and live in a way that this is a reality in my life.

I can do a lot of things in this new year, set multiple goals and make detail plans to achieve them. I do love making plans, but there is a truth that never changes and no matter to what I spent my time on, this is the guide for our life.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

and all these things will be added to you.

The same God

There are only a few more hours until the new year, my agenda is filled with plans that I’m excited to achieve. Looking at them and remembering that my year is under the same God as the past. I have a huge question. Will I seek him first? Will I fix my eyes on him, no matter the trials or the blessings?

Yes, because when I look to the years past I see the same God. Seated on his throne, (Psalm 9:7) in whom there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11), the One worthy of my praise (Psalm 61:8), the same merciful and good God. (Psalm 106:1)

Looking at the new year about to begin, without knowledge of what will happen, I can say: I’m not afraid of bad news; my heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. (Psalm 112:7; change and emphasis by the author) I have no idea of what is to come, but there is one thing I know for sure, that the same God that has held me until today, will hold me fast tomorrow. The same God that is worthy of all my efforts, love and passion, remains seated on his throne.

Let’s live this year facing the same God that has saved us. Let’s walk this year acknowledging that He is always in the first place. Let it be our delight to plan our lives around his kingdom and righteousness.
